Field Notes

Hyalite Canyon has a reservoir beach that fills up on July weekends and a waterfall loop that gets steady foot traffic all summer. Fairy Creek Falls has neither.

Head south from Bozeman on Hyalite Canyon Road and look for Forest Road 73 turning off to the east before the reservoir. Drive in 2.4 miles to the old miner’s cabin landmark, where a faint trail drops into the drainage below. The falls are 0.3 miles in — a 20-foot cascade over a granite shelf into a pool deep enough to swim in from mid-July through August, when snowmelt slows and the water warms slightly. It stays cold even in peak summer. That is part of the appeal.

Late summer is the window: come before mid-July and the access road may still be soft from snowmelt, and the pool runs fast and shallow. After Labor Day the Gallatin National Forest starts to empty out and you may have the falls entirely to yourself. Check the Bozeman Ranger District for current road conditions on FS-73 — it is not maintained to the same standard as Hyalite Canyon Road proper and can be rough after significant rain.
