Ancient moss-covered trees in old growth temperate rainforest with filtered green light
The Monologue

The Backchannel Dispatch.

Seven spots off US-101 — old-growth groves past the Hoh queue, minus-tide tide pools, and one river swimming hole where the Skokomish runs green in August.

The Hoh Rain Forest gets the Instagram traffic and the full lot by 10 a.m. The Peninsula has five other river valleys that rival it and essentially zero signage. Turn off 101 onto any Forest Service road south of Forks and you're alone in ten minutes — moss-draped old growth, river holes the trailhead signs don't mention, and a coastline where the minus tides rearrange every visit.

This guide is the field team's notes from after the Hoh shuttle buses leave. The Peninsula that still works the way it did when the roads first cut in.

The Vibe

Moss, fog, cold rivers, Pacific air. Raincoat weather three hundred days a year — worth every one. The old growth here has been waiting you out for a thousand years and will keep doing it.

Local Insider

Every Subaru on the Peninsula is in the lot at the Hall of Mosses. Drive an hour south. The Bogachiel has the same moss, same light, and zero cars.
