Elephant Rock Swimming Hole
A deep, elephant-shaped boulder on the Saco River just upstream from the Conway Scenic Railroad tracks, where the river pools to 6-8 feet — ideal for jumping and cooling off. Locals have been coming here for generations without it ever showing up in a travel guide.
Conway families have kept this spot close to their chest for decades. The Conway Daily Sun called it out in a July 2024 piece on 'secret river spots locals love,' but most visitors never find it. The elephant-rock formation warms up beautifully in the sun, the jump depths are forgiving, and Tuesday through Thursday mornings you'll often have the whole hole to yourself.
Park at the Echo Lake Beach lot off West Side Road — free, but fills by 10am on summer weekends. Walk downriver along the trail for about 5 minutes. You can't miss the distinctive elephant-shaped boulder marking the swimming hole. Public river access maintained by the town, no trespassing concerns.

The Saco River has no shortage of swimming holes, but most of them have signs, parking lots, and a rope telling you where not to jump. Elephant Rock has none of that.
It’s that distinctive elephant-shaped boulder just upstream from the Conway Scenic Railroad tracks — locals know it by the shape, not by any marker. The river pools here to 6-8 feet in the center, with smooth rock surfaces that warm in the sun and a current that runs slower than the more famous spots upstream.
The Conway Daily Sun mentioned it in July 2024 in a piece about river spots locals actually use, noting families have been coming for decades to escape summer heat without the crowds of Cathedral Ledge or Lower Falls. That coverage didn’t seem to change much — this spot filters itself. You have to know to walk downriver from the Echo Lake lot, and you have to know what you’re looking for when you get there.
Aim for the shaded side of the rock in the afternoon. By midday the sun moves and the water on the shadow side stays noticeably cooler. Weekends bring tubers launching upstream, which adds some current. Tuesday through Thursday mornings in July and August are the sweet spot — the lot isn’t full yet, the water is cold but not shocking, and the rocks are already starting to warm.
Bring water shoes. The riverbed around the boulder mixes sandy stretches with algae-covered rocks that are genuinely slippery. It’s not dangerous, but bare feet and impatience are a bad combination here.
